Oral Presentations
The Society for Microscale Separation and Bioanalysis has encouraged a unique format for the MSB meetings that is designed to encourage the presentation and discussion of the best and latest scientific developments in our field. The guiding principles for achieving this at the MSB meetings is outlined in their Philosophy of MSB Symposia - http://www.msb-society.org/philosophy/
Length of Presentations
We have done all we can to help maintain this philosophy in our structure of the program and selection of speakers through the double-blind review process. Now we ask that as speakers at the MSB conference you prepare to do your part to "Encouraging vigorous scientific debate and discussion" through your presentations. In order to allow this to happen there must be time within the sessions for significant discussion and questions. We ask that all presenters limit their speaking time to ⅔ of the allotted time, leaving the remainder for discussion and question.
- •Plenary presentations: 40 minutes - 30 for presentation 10 for discussion
- •Keynote presentations: 25 minutes - 20 for presentation 5 for discussion
- •Contributed presentations: 20 minutes - 15 for presentation 5 for discussion
We recognize that this can be a bit of a challenge, but we strongly encourage you to rise to the challenge to present the excellent work you have accomplished with sufficient time to engage with the audience in a discussion of what you have achieved.
Presentations Logistics
For your presentations we encourage you to bring your own laptop or device for the presentation. We are confident that we can all make efficient exchanges of devices between presentations - just remember to bring a dongle to connect to the projector. Using your own device will help ensure the presentation is just as you designed it with none of the quirks of using someone else's device.
However should you need or prefer it we will have a laptop in the room for the presentation of presentations. Please bring a flash drive or have an accessible online version of your talk should you wish to use the shared laptop.
We encourage everyone to make their presentations in slides with a 16:9 aspect ratio for the best appearance and consistency between speakers. You are also welcome to access the rooms and projectors between breaks to ensure that your presentation is displaying as desired.
Young Scientist Award
We are very happy to see that many of the talks that were selected through the double-blind review process were submitted by our young scientist! This speaks both to the quality of the next generation of the scientists in our field and the quality mentorship that they are receiving.
To further encourage the growth of our young scientists we will present the MSB Young Scientist Award to a young researcher whose outstanding work sets an example for other scientists! So prepare your best presentation and stick around to the closing ceremonies on Wednesday to learn who the winner of this award will be.
Poster Presentations
We are very happy to see that so many high quality abstracts were submitted for the meeting. If we had an infinite amount of time we would love to have had all abstracts presented as orals, however we don't have that luxury. We will however provide time, space, and awards for the poster presentations.
We will have the poster boards ready for you to display your work on Monday morning. The posters boards will be located in the main gathering area for the meeting (room Ventana B), along with the coffee, snacks, and displays from our vendors - so your work is sure to be seen by many. We would like you to put up your poster on Monday, and leave it up until the closing of the meeting.
The official presentation of the posters, along with their judging, will take place on Monday and Tuesday during the afternoon coffee break from 14:35 - 16:00. Poster presenters should have received an email with poster number and presentation day.
Poster Awards
Our generous sponsors have been very kind and supportive with multiple poster prizes to be given out for the outstanding work that will be presented. The presentation of these awards, and recognition of you as the award winner, will take place in the Wednesday afternoon session at the closing of the conference.
We also wish to highlight our younger scientists through our Young Investigator Award. For those presenting posters, we will select 4–5 finalists from each poster session to give a "flash talk" during the poster award session on Wednesday. We ask that all eligible poster presenters prepare a 3 minute summary of their work in case they are selected. Finalists will be notified after both poster sessions, so please be ready to present if chosen.
Presentations Logistics
For the poster presentations we will have poster boards that measure 4'x8' (120 x 240 cm) - however you will be sharing the face of the board with a fellow presenter - so the usable space for poster presentations will be limited to no more than 4'x4' (120 x 120 cm). Pins for mounting the posters will be provided.
There will only be one poster presented per side of the poster board per day, so crowding at the poster should not be an issue - though exciting results/developments may draw crowds that we cannot be responsible for!
